Scottsdale’s Downtown Trolley changes route to better serve customers
Scottsdale’s free Downtown Trolley is adjusting its route to provide better service to visitors, residents and businesses.
“The route was changed in response to requests from merchants and supportive comments received at several public outreach events,” said Transit Manager Madeline Clemann. “By moving the route off of major arterials and into the heart of downtown this route will serve more residents, businesses and hotels.”
The route adjustments begin Dec. 12. The revised Downtown service provides two transfer stops, one for the Miller Road Route at Indian School and Miller roads, and another for the Neighborhood Route at Marshall Way and 2nd Street.
The Downtown Trolley route provides free service seven days a week to all of Scottsdale’s popular art and shopping districts:
• Old Town
• Main Street Arts District
• Marshall Way Arts District
• Fifth Avenue Shops
• Scottsdale Fashion Square
• Waterfront
• SouthBridge
• The Galleria
The trolleys run every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Downtown Route service is extended until 9 p.m. on Thursday to serve ArtWalk patrons. During spring training, the Downtown Trolley provides direct service to Scottsdale Stadium for every home game from all Downtown parking lots and business stops.
The route revisions taking place Dec. 12 are the results of ongoing efforts to bring residents and visitors to downtown businesses.
The modified route eliminates the westerly portion of Indian School Road, Sixth Avenue and a Scottsdale Road segment where little ridership is generated. It will focus on an eastern segment of Indian School Road, Third Avenue and Drinkwater Boulevard – all of which front residences.
In addition to transfer points to the other two trolley routes, the Downtown Route, connects to the Tempe Orbit Earth and Valley Metro bus routes. Each trolley is ADA accessible (wheelchair lift equipped), air-conditioned in hot weather and open-aired during cooler weather.
To board a trolley, wait at a Downtown Trolley sign, at a Valley Metro bus stop along the route, or stand alongside the road and simply wave at the trolley driver for a ride. Posted trolley stops downtown have maps and passenger information.
