Mayor/Council Breakfast celebrates growing legacy of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve

  Mayor/Council Breakfast celebrates growing legacy
  of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve

 

Residents are invited to a free Mayor and City Council Breakfast Oct. 13 celebrating the growing legacy of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Activities begin at 7 a.m. at the preserve’s Gateway Access Area, 18333 N. Thompson Peak Pkwy.

The breakfast is a great opportunity to learn why Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve is like no other place in the Valley. Spread across 17,000 scenic acres, the preserve is unique geologically and is home to stunning geography, lush cacti forests and diverse wildlife. It also features award-winning trails and facilities.

Those great amenities will be highlighted at the breakfast through a series of videos available for viewing in a mobile theater starting at 7 a.m. at the Gateway.

The actual breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by a program at 8 focused on new initiatives in the preserve and the area’s past, present and future.

Among topics will be the status of proposed acquisitions that could add more than 10,000 acres to the preserve, an update on trail and trailhead construction and insights from a comprehensive survey of plants and animals taking place in the preserve.

Featured speakers include Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane, former Mayor Mary Manross, Scottsdale Poet Laureate Bob Frost, local historian Len Marcisz and Mike Nolan, executive director of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.

Scottsdale City Councilman Ron McCullagh and Howard Myers, chairman of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission, are also scheduled to speak at the breakfast.
