Green Building Lecture kicks off with new green code introduction

Green Building Lecture kicks off with introduction
to Scottsdale’s new International Green Construction Code
Residents and the design and development community are invited to learn about Scottsdale’s newly-adopted International Green Construction Code at this season’s kick-off Green Building Lecture, “What Happens When Green becomes Code . . . an Introduction to the IgCC.” The free program is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road.
The Scottsdale City Council recently adopted the code as the core of the city’s voluntary Commercial Green Building Program. This step makes it easier for developers of commercial and multi-family housing to “go green” – a “whole systems” approach through design and construction techniques to minimize environmental impacts, reduce energy consumption, incorporate renewable energy, conserve water and improve indoor environmental quality.
Several factors led to the adoption of the new code. Scottsdale’s Green Building Program Manager Anthony Floyd says, “The new national code promotes uniformity and consistency from city to city while providing flexibility to adapt to Scottsdale’s geographic conditions and environmental quality of life.”
It includes new baseline measures for on-site renewable energy, net zero energy performance, water use reductions and accountable materials and products. In addition, by integrating the new code into the city’s plan review, inspection and verification process, green certification is streamlined and a Green Certificate of Occupancy is provided after final city inspections.
