Scottsdale wants you to “Rock Your Park”

“Rock Your Park” and celebrate National Park and Recreation Month during July.  The world of parks and recreation touches more than 300 million people in this county -- about 5 million in Scottsdale alone.

Of that 5 million, five belong to Scottsdale’s Goehring family.  Parents Todd and Trina love the variety of the programs and activities available to her three children -- Nick, 13, Carly, 12, and Ellie, 10.  “The programs are reasonably-priced and well-run,” adds Trina.

Scottsdale has 41 public parks that encompass 941 acres, four public swimming pools, 105 miles of bike lanes, 67 miles of paved paths and 143 miles of non-preserve trails.  Last year, more than 50,000 people registered for various classes and activities.

Scottsdale’s celebration focuses on education and awareness.  “We want our residents to learn about the endless opportunities we offer,” says Parks and Recreation Director Jan Cameron.  “Whether it’s swimming in one of our pools, attending one of the hundreds of classes we offer, hiking at our beautiful Pinnacle Peak Park or just hanging out with your family at one of our great parks, we want folks to know that there’s something for everyone.”

As part of this month’s commemoration, Mayor W. J. “Jim” Lane will be proclaiming July as Park and Recreation Month in Scottsdale at the Tuesday, June 28, City Council meeting.

The city also is hosting two free Boot Camps:  7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Eldorado Community Center, 2311 N. Miller Road; and 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at Cactus Park and Aquatic Center, 7202 E. Cactus Road.  For details and registration, visit http://recreation.scottsdaleaz.gov or call (480) 312-7957.  Learn about other activities happening this month at http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Assets/Public+Website/parks/RYP_Calendar.pdf.
