Scottsdale chef to create showpiece cake for city’s 60th anniversary party

Chef Tracy DeWitt can handle the heat of the kitchen. She has proved that both as an instructor at Scottsdale’s Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, and also as a five-time competitor on Food Network Challenge.

Now, she is creating a one-of-a-kind showpiece cake to celebrate Scottsdale’s 60th anniversary – and she is asking the community to help select the final design.

DeWitt has created three concepts for the showpiece cake: “The Jewel Box”, “Old West Meets New West” and “Scottsdale Greenbelt.”  Because this is a community celebration, Chef DeWitt wanted the community to select the final design.

Primary voting will take place via the city’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ScottsdaleAzGov, where visitors can review each potential design. The deadline for voting is midnight on June 2.

“As a pastry chef I create edible works of art every day,” DeWitt said. “As a Scottsdale resident for over 20 years, it’s especially exciting for me to be part of this event.”

Scottsdale Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane is happy that Chef DeWitt and the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts are among the many community partners joining the celebration.

“Chef DeWitt’s creation promises to be a culinary experience that will not disappoint,” he said.

Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts President Lloyd Kirsch didn’t hesitate when presented the idea of being a big part of Scottsdale’s 60th anniversary celebration in conjunction with Scottsdale Public Art.

“We know that Chef DeWitt, who is one of several award-winning pastry instructors at Le Cordon Bleu, will create something that captures the unique character and history of Scottsdale,” said Kirsch.

The cake will be unveiled on June 25 during a breakfast birthday party hosted by Scottsdale’s Mayor and City Council. The event is one of many taking place throughout the city as Scottsdale celebrates its 60th anniversary of incorporation. Learn more at www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/Scottsdale60/.
