  Legacy Trail brings Cactus League history to life

 

From the Buckhorn Baths to Ernie Banks and Buster Posey, Arizona’s Cactus League has a history steeped in sun, fun, phenoms and Hall of Famers.

That colorful past comes to life this spring in a series of exhibits collectively called the Cactus League Legacy Trail. Six memorabilia collections in Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix make up the trail, a must-see journey for even casual baseball fans.

Collectively, these exhibits tell the story of the Cactus League from its barn-storming beginnings to the state-of-the-art complexes of today.  They also present the remarkable stories, photos and memorabilia of the ballplayers who through the years created “America’s Pastime.”

 

The Legacy Trail exhibits include:

 

• Play Ball – The Cactus League Experience exhibit at the Arizona Historical Society Museum at Papago Park, 1300 N. College Avenue, Tempe. The exhibit, presented in partnership with the Mesa Historical Museum, opens Feb. 19 with historical items, photos and objects relating to the Cactus League you won’t see anywhere else in America! • The Scottsdale Spring Training History exhibit at the Scottsdale Historical Museum, 7333 E. Scottsdale Mall. Scottsdale’s rich spring training history comes to life with this multimedia exhibit featuring items, displays and stories about Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and other baseball greats.  The exhibit opens Feb. 23. • The spring training memorabilia collection at the new Pink Pony restaurant, 3831 N. Scottsdale Road. Hailed as the "the best baseball restaurant in the land" by New Yorker writer Roger Angell, the Pink Pony reopens Feb. 12 with a unique exhibit dedicated to 60 years of Cactus League history.  For more information, visit:  www.pinkponyrestaurant.com.

 

• The sports memorabilia collection at Don and Charlie’s restaurant, 7501 E. Camelback Road. With walls brimming with jerseys, shoes and autographs, plus a display case filled with baseballs signed by Hall of Famers, Don and Charlie’s is a museum in its own right. • Play Ball – The Cactus League Experience exhibit at the Arizona Museum for Youth in downtown Mesa at 35 N. Robson opens Feb. 25 and features a youthful spin on the League’s history, plus some objects and photos not found in the Tempe show.  For more information, visit http://www.playballexperience.com

 

• Play Ball – The Cactus League Experience exhibit at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport’s Terminal Four.  Visitors arriving in the Valley will get an introduction to the Cactus League through baseball art and items from the stadiums and communities that host spring training in Arizona.  The exhibit opens Feb 19.
