Celebrations mark City Council transitions
A celebration of Mayor Mary Manross's and Council Member Betty Drake's service to Scottsdale is set from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. Mayor Manross and Council Member Drake will be leaving the Council on Jan. 12.
Then, on Jan. 13, the city will host an informal reception from 4 to 5 p.m., prior to the formal swearing-in of W.J. “Jim” Lane as mayor, Ron McCullagh to a second term as a councilman, and Suzanne Klapp and Lisa Borowsky as new City Council members. The reception will be at City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd.
Lane, who has been on the council since 2004, won election to the mayor’s seat on Nov. 4. McCullagh won a second term and Klapp and Borowsky won council seats. They will join Vice Mayor Robert Littlefield and Councilmen Wayne Ecton and Tony Nelssen.
Both receptions are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.
Mayor Manross served from April 1992 to June 2000 as a City Council member and has served since then as mayor. Before her election to the council, she served on the Scottsdale Parks and Recreation Commission, the Planning Commission, and as vice chair of the Scottsdale Bond Commission.
She is the current chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments Regional Council, which includes mayors of most cities in the county, and has served on many regional and national committees on municipal issues.
Council Member Drake’s service in local, state and federal governments also spans decades. In Scottsdale, she has served on the council since June 2004. She served previously on the Scottsdale Planning Commission, the Development Review Board, the Historic Preservation Task Force and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plan Task Force. She also served on the Phoenix Planning Commission, on the Arizona State Parks Board and many other state and federal advisory committees on planning, transportation and outdoor recreation.
