Community Celebrating Diversity Announces Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Events, Activities

 

Community Celebrating Diversity (CCD), along with the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Unified School District, will be hosting several upcoming activities in honor of the slain civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.


 They include:

  • Youth Voices -- 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, Coronado High School, 2501 N. 74th St. Scottsdale.  Special guest speaker Susan L. Taylor will address high school students from all Scottsdale schools. Taylor is also the keynote speaker for the Dinner Celebration later the same evening (see below for more biographical information). (480) 484-6187.

 

  • 15th Annual Scottsdale Community Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Celebration -- 5:30 p.m. registration, Friday, Jan. 9, Chaparral Suites, 5001 N. Scottsdale Road.  Editor Emerita of Essence Magazine and founder of the National Cares Mentoring Movement, Susan L. Taylor will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Celebration. As the driving force behind one of the most celebrated Black-owned businesses for nearly three decades, Taylor has become a legend in the magazine publishing world, having received the Henry Johnson Fisher Award by the Magazine Publishers of America. She also is a recipient of the NAACP President’s Award for visionary leadership. Tickets are $60 per person.   • Peace and Community Day – A Day of Unity -- Noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, 7380 E. Second St. This event features a diverse selection of entertainment, arts and crafts, family activities, food, refreshments and community information. There also will be a screening at 1 p.m. of “Brother Outsider,” the award-winning documentary by Bennett Singer on the life of civil rights era strategist Bayard Rustin. Free admission.
