  Scottsdale’s award-winning preservation team
on tap for next Mayor and City Council Breakfast

The city staff members who oversee the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, winners of the 2008 SRP Environmental Stewardship Crescordia from Valley Forward, will be the featured speakers at the next Mayor and City Council Breakfast.

The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. In celebration of McDowell Sonoran Month through October, the staff will be highlighting the work of volunteers in the preserve and progress on the new Preserve Gateway.

Preservation Director Bob Cafarella, Preserve Manager Claire Miller and Trails Planner Scott Hamilton will be the featured speakers.

The 2008 SRP Environmental Stewardship Award, which recognizes sustained environmental performance, singled out the three employees for their roles in guiding the ongoing stewardship of the preserve, managing planning for public access and use of the preserve and for exemplifying a commitment to preservation of the Sonoran Desert.

More than a decade ago, Scottsdale citizens initiated the vision for what ultimately will be the preservation of approximately 36,400 acres of Scottsdale's McDowell Mountains and Sonoran Desert. When completed, the preserve will encompass nearly one-third of the city's land area and will be one of the largest urban preserves in the country.

Light refreshments will be available at 7:30 a.m. and the program begins at 8 a.m. The program is free and open to the public.
