  Alamos, Scottsdale’s first Sister City

Scottsdale’s first Sister City – Alamos, Sonora, Mexico – needs help in recovering from devastating flooding caused by Hurricane Norbert, which hit the Baja region and passed through the town on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning. The Scottsdale Sister Cities Committee is organizing deliveries of much-needed supplies to the area, and citizens are invited to donate by Thursday evening at two locations listed below.

Alamos, located in northwestern Mexico, has been a Scottsdale Sister City since 1971 and has a population of nearly 12,000 residents. Reports on damages are still coming in, but early reports suggest that as many as six people may have died in severe flooding. Homes and schools have been inundated with several feet of mud and nearly all businesses are closed. Electricity and water service have been disrupted. Roads and bridges have been completely washed out.

Efforts are underway through Scottsdale Sister Cities to transport needed items to Alamos this weekend. Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross spoke with Alamos Mayor Ruth Acuna this afternoon to express Scottsdale's commitment to help. Mayor Acuna said she would be most grateful for any help with the following community needs:

--clothes for children and adults

--diapers

--blankets

--bedding

--powdered milk

--bottled water

--pots and pans

--utensils

--toiletry items

--flashlights with batteries

Two community locations have been identified for donations:

Pima North Neighborhood Resource Center

8787 E Hualapai Drive (Just off Pima Rd., 1 mile north of the 101 freeway, 1 block north of Downing Olson Dr., at the Scottsdale Water Campus)

480-312-6280

Granite Reef Neighborhood Resource Center

1700 N. Granite Reef Road (Northwest corner of Granite Reef and McDowell Roads, (inside the Senior Center)

480-312-7900

In order for Sister Cities to deliver the donations to Alamos this Friday, donations need to be dropped off by 6 p.m. Thursday.

Both locations will be open for extended hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday to accept donations.

Citizens who have questions or need further information can call the city’s main line at 480-312-3111.
