  Native American influences in Scottsdale
highlighted during next Cross Cultural Series program

How did Native Americans help shape the history of Scottsdale?

Speakers representing two neighboring Native American communities will tackle that subject during the second installment of the 2008 Scottsdale Cross Cultural Series, with two presentations at the following times:

  • Noon, Tuesday, Nov. 11.

  • 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.

Both panel discussions will take place at the Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. The programs are free and open to the public.

The sessions are the second of a seven-part series on the influence of various cultural groups on the history of Scottsdale. Guest speakers are:

  • Kelly Washington – cultural resource director, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
  • Shane Anton – acting Cultural Preservation Program supervisor, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
  • Raphael Bear – former president, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation
  • Steve Geiogamah – tourism development coordinator, City of Scottsdale
  • Hans Klose – Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community member, owner of Ironwood Consulting Group

The 2008-09 Cross Cultural Series is covering the history, historic figures and contributions made locally by Native Americans, Hispanic Americans/immigrants from Mexico (including the Yaqui people), Asian Americans, Euro-Americans and African Americans. The series also will touch on the history and contributions of Scottsdale’s faith community as it relates to Scottsdale’s cultural mosaic.

An introduction to the series by local historian Joan Fudala is now airing on CityCable 11 at noon, 4, 7 and 10 p.m. on Sundays through November. CityCable will broadcast video coverage of the presentation on Native Americans at the same times in December.

The Scottsdale Human Relations Commission and the Scottsdale Public Library are sponsoring this free program. Light refreshments will be provided.
