Hispanic Heritage event at Scottsdale Civic Center Mall

The city and Scottsdale’s Human Relations Commission invite residents to attend the 6th Annual Hispanic Heritage ¡Celebración Comunitaria! event on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, 7380 E. Second St.

Scottsdale’s Celebración Comunitaria is a free event that brings the rich Hispanic culture and traditions to the community through:

· Educational exhibits showcasing the 21 Hispanic cultures and countries represented during the Hispanic Heritage national designation

· Exhibition of art forms and displays of local Hispanic artists showcasing their talents

· A main stage featuring live entertainment from the various Hispanic countries represented through different dances and featuring “New Frequency Band” and “Jibaros Sin Frontera with Ballet Folklórico de Bomba y Plena”

· Educational children activities that include face painting, Mexican basket weaving, art magnet and wall art projects, making of piñatas, and prizes

· Food vendors showcasing cuisine from various Hispanic cultures

The Scottsdale Prevention Institute also will showcase a community art project. Event participants will have the opportunity to use color and shapes on individual gardening stones to express this year’s art exhibition theme: Hope. These individual art expressions will be displayed later at Centro de la Familia located at the Paiute Neighborhood Center.

Scottsdale’s commitment to the educational objectives of the ¡Celebración Comunitaria! continues to be demonstrated through the delivery of youth scholarships. Proceeds from this event along with Scottsdale’s 16th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dinner Celebration, to be held on Jan. 12, 2009, will be used to fund these scholarships.

Hispanic Heritage ¡Celebración Comunitaria! began as an internal city of Scottsdale employee event in 2000, has grown into a communitywide celebration attracting nearly 5,000 people.

Along with the city of Scottsdale, event sponsors include Arizona Federal Credit Union, Sunrise Bank, Arizona Public Service, Cox Communications, Scottsdale Republic, Scottsdale Healthcare, Scottsdale Prevention Institute, Wells Fargo and Mundo Latino Entertainment Productions as well as many in-kind partners.
