WestWorld calendar is packed; road projects mean
reaching fall events may take a few more minutes
Good news: Scottsdale’s popular equestrian and events venue, WestWorld, has a packed calendar for the fall, winter and spring seasons.
Good advice: Watch traffic reports and plan on a few extra minutes if you plan on attending an event, especially this fall, as freeway and street construction projects in the area move ahead.
“We’ve started a very full season of events,” said WestWorld General Manager Brian Dygert. “This is going to be a popular destination, especially on weekends. A little planning will help.”
People heading to this weekend’s El Zaribah Shrine Circus and Equistar Horse Show, for instance, will find the northbound lanes of the Pima Freeway detoured to Hayden Road from Thomas Road to Shea Boulevard. The closure is planned for 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday to prepare for the opening of new high-occupancy vehicle lanes later in the fall.
The circus opens Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. and runs Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. There is an admission charge.
The horse show begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and is free to spectators.
Additional work is planned on the Pima Freeway later in October, as the Arizona Department of Transportation finishes up work on the HOV lanes between the Loop 202 Interchange and Via de Ventura. The department also continues work on HOV lanes farther north and east along the Loop 101.
The department has restriped the freeway to keep three lanes open while HOV construction continues, and traffic to major events at WestWorld and the nearby Tournament Players Club early next year should not be affected by the ongoing work.
Fall events at WestWorld include more than 20 equestrian shows, two dog shows, a home and building expo and a hot rod show. Highlights include the Scottsdale Classic Quarter Horse Show Oct. 2-8, the Arizona Festival of Horses Dec. 12-14 and the U.S. Team Roping Champion ships Dec. 27-29.
A complete listing of fall events and links to sponsors is available at the WestWorld Web page.
WestWorld’s busiest season begins in January and runs through the spring with some of Scottsdale’s most well-attended and renowned events. Horses, collectible cars, motorcycles, home improvement, art and jewelry are the focus of a wide variety of events on the calendar. Highlights include:
- The Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event, Jan. 11-18.
- The Arizona Sun Circuit Quarter Horse Show, January 23-31.
- The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, Feb. 12-22.
- The Parada del Sol Rodeo, Feb. 27, 28 and March 1.
- The 19th annual National Festival of the West. March 19-22.
WestWorld is at 16601 N. Pima Road, accessible off the Loop 101 from the Pima/Princess and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard exits. For directions and more information on WestWorld, visit the WestWorld Web page or call 480-312-6802
