Registration is under way for Scottsdale Design Day, which will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road.
This free event is geared toward the owners of single-family homes south of Indian Bend Road.
Sponsored by the city and the Green Building Advisory Committee, Design Day offers pre-registered participants the opportunity to meet with volunteer architects, and landscape and interior design specialists to discuss home renovations and redesigns during a free, 45-minute consultation.
Appointments, which are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, will be scheduled beginning at 9 a.m. with the last appointment starting at 1 p.m. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and is available online at www.ScottsdaleAz.gov/reinvestment or by phone at (480) 312-3111, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Participants are encouraged to bring their sketches, photos, measurements and design ideas to their pre-assigned consultations.
Scottsdale Design Day was created to help manage the revitalization of mature neighborhoods south of Indian Bend Road by providing professional design inspiration for owners intending to remodel their homes. The focus:
- To encourage the use of Green Building philosophies and practices
- To ensure that remodeled homes complement and enhance the character of existing neighborhoods while successfully accommodating today’s lifestyles
- To ensure that those living in designated Historic Districts propose designs that embrace the objectives of Scottsdale’s Historic Preservation Department
- To offer home remodeling design ideas that will efficiently respond to our local climate and environment
- To promote water conservation by offering xeriscape landscaping solutions
- To raise awareness about various city programs available to the community for home reinvestment
- To facilitate an understanding of plan review, permitting, and related requirements by introducing homeowners to the city’s One Stop Shop
Several free lectures on various topics such as xeriscaping, green building practices and home energy audits will be held throughout the day. City staff will also discuss city incentives, waivers, rebates, and programs and services.
Senior center tours also will be available. In spring 2007, the U.S. Green Building Council recognized the center with the coveted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. The award recognizes the center for its sustainable, green building qualities. This is the first public building in Scottsdale to receive LEED Gold certification under the city's green building policy.
Architects, and landscape and interior design professionals interested in volunteering at this event can contact Judy Melton, neighborhood resource manager, at (480) 312-2821 or jmelton@scottsdaleaz.gov.
