Updated unofficial results indicate mayor’s race,
all City Council seats will go to Nov. 4 runoff

Preliminary figures released by Maricopa County this weekend indicate that no candidate for mayor or three City Council seats was elected on Sept. 2, and the race for all of the seats will move to a Nov. 4 runoff.

To win direct election and skip the runoff, candidates on Sept. 2 needed votes equal to at least one more than 50 percent of the ballots cast. The county’s final unofficial figures showed that 35,764 citizens cast ballots in the election, which means that a candidate would need to receive 17,883 votes to be elected.

Final returns reported in the mayoral race on Saturday showed neither of the candidates listed on the ballot reached the minimum number to be elected. Councilman Jim Lane garnered 17,463 votes and incumbent Mayor Mary Manross had 17,096. The total votes for write-in candidate Bill Crawford have not yet been reported, but the total of all write-in votes was 178.

In the City Council race, as required under the City Charter, the two top vote-getters for each remaining seat head to the runoff. Because all three seats remained to be filled, the six top candidates will go to the Nov. 4 ballot. They are incumbent Councilman Ron McCullagh with 15,333 votes, incumbent Council Member Betty Drake with 14,356, Suzanne Klapp with 13,864, Lisa Borowsky with 12,576, Nan Nesvig with 9,151 and Tom Giller with 9,067.

The two other candidates in the City Council race were Joel BramOweth, who had 6,263 votes, and Oren Davis, who had 5,621.

These are still unofficial results. The City Council is tentatively set to canvass the election and determine the official results on Sept. 16.

There are also reports that a legal challenge may be filed.

Delays in reporting final numbers during the past week stemmed, in part, from early voting alternatives. Voters who cast early ballots could mail them in or wait until election day to drop them off at the polls. The ballots mailed in on time were counted immediately, but those dropped at the polls could not be counted until Maricopa County elections workers processed them later in the week, matching signatures to verify their authenticity.

Candidates seated in the Nov. 4 election will be sworn into office during the first City Council meeting of January 2009.

More information on the elections is available by visiting the City Clerk’s website at: www.scottsdaleaz.gov/elections.
