Resident donations provide funds for those in need
Thousands of Scottsdale residents in need will get social services thanks to the generosity of the community. Scottsdale Cares, the city’s voluntary donation program, encourages residents to add an extra $1 per month to their monthly utility bill. That funding supports human service programs that assist Scottsdale residents of all ages in addressing crisis needs.
The Scottsdale City Council recently approved $240,000 of Scottsdale Cares funds for 20 social service agencies. The funding will pay for a variety of direct human services to Scottsdale residents for fiscal year 2009/10. Services include rent/mortgage assistance, utility assistance, employment for severely disabled adults, support groups for the mentally ill, a hotline for troubled teens, and home-delivered meals to the elderly.
“With tough economic times, it’s more important than ever to secure as much funding as possible,” says Human Services Director Paul Ludwick. “On behalf of Human Services and those we serve, we thank all those who have generously donated to Scottsdale Cares.”
The 20 nonprofit agencies funded by Scottsdale Cares are: A New Leaf (formerly PREHAB of Arizona, Inc.); Alzheimer’s Association; Area Agency on Aging; Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale; Child Crisis Center – East Valley; Community Bridges; Community Information and Referral; Concerned Citizens for Community Health; Family Promise; Foothills Community Foundation; FSL Programs – Adult Day Therapeutic and Restorative Health; Greater Phoenix Youth at Risk Foundation; Homeward Bound; Mental Health America of Arizona; Phoenix Shanti Group; Save the Family Foundation of Arizona; Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services; Teen Lifeline; Tempe Community Action Agency; and Valley of the Sun YMCA.
Since the May 1995 inception of Scottsdale Cares, Scottsdale residents have
donated more than $1.9 million -- one dollar at a time.
The City Council approved Scottsdale Cares funding as part of a $2.1 million funding package that included Community Development Block Grants, HOME funds and endowment dollars -- awarding grants to 37 social service programs in the community.
