New trails offer fresh discoveries
during McDowell Sonoran Month
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is like no other place in the Valley. It is unique geologically. It is home to stunning geography, lush cacti forests and diverse wildlife. It features award-winning trails and facilities.
See for yourself. October is McDowell Sonoran Month – a great time to celebrate and explore the preserve, stretched across 14,000 scenic acres of Scottsdale.
The preserve encompasses the McDowell Mountains, where recent discoveries are causing geologists to rethink how this region formed and evolved. This fall, new trails and amenities are bringing Scottsdale’s “mountains of discovery” closer to residents and visitors.
The newest addition to the preserve will be dedicated this Saturday, Sept. 26. From 7 to 10 a.m. a grand opening celebration will be held for the Bajada Nature Trail, located at the Preserve Gateway, 18333 N. Thompson Peak Parkway.
The Bajada Nature Trail is a first for Scottsdale -- an innovative nature experience
accessible to anyone would like to learn more about Arizona’s unique Sonoran Desert.
The trail will provide new opportunities to experience the preserve, but it is just the latest in several recent additions. Last May, the Gateway area was dedicated and three trails were completed that provide new, scenic hiking experiences in the preserve. This fall marks the first full season of access to the Tom’s Thumb, East End and Lookout trails.
Check them all out during McDowell Sonoran Preserve Month. The city and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy are hosting numerous guided hikes and other special events to celebrate Scottsdale’s “mountains of discovery.”
