East meets West with Taiwanese Little League visit

The baseball tradition of Tainan City resonates across the globe. Teams from that Taiwanese city have captured five Little League world championships – more than any other locale.

Tainan City’s team is touring the Valley over the next few weeks and writing another chapter in its rich history.

The team will be participating in several local baseball tournaments, touring the Diamondbacks’ facilities, christening a Taiwanese baseball exhibit at Scottsdale Stadium and making a literal splash at Scottsdale’s McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center – sampling its lazy river and water slides.

An interactive tour of the Scottsdale Police and Fire training center and a trip to the Grand Canyon are also in the lineup.

The visit came about when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane visited Taiwan in November 2013 to discuss sports tourism opportunities between the two countries.

Both the Valley and Tainan City are hotbeds for baseball and youth sports, so the Little League team’s Arizona tour seemed a natural way to begin a sports-cultural exchange between our regions.

Here’s an overview of team activities planned in Scottsdale. The public is invited to attend the exhibition games, the City Hall presentation and the Scottsdale Stadium events, which are free.
