Public invited to comment on strengthening airport runway and taxiways

A public information workshop and hearing is scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 21, to discuss and gather public comments on an environmental assessment for strengthening Scottsdale Airport’s runway and associated taxiways to consistently accommodate aircraft up to 100,000 pounds.

Both meetings will be at the Scottsdale Thunderbird Suites, High Flight Room #2, 7515 E. Butherus Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.  The workshop takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Following the workshop, a formal public hearing will allow participants to provide comments to a court reporter.

Aircraft at Scottsdale Airport currently can operate up to a maximum weight of 100,000 pounds, but those more than 75,000 pounds must receive prior approval.

The environmental assessment will determine the viability of permanently shifting the maximum aircraft operating weight to 100,000 pounds by evaluating a variety of factors including aircraft noise and air quality.

A typical 100,000-pound aircraft is a large corporate jet that seats 12 to 16 passengers and crew.

The draft environmental assessment is available for review online and at the Scottsdale Airport Administrative Office, Scottsdale City Hall, Scottsdale Arabian Library, and the Federal Aviation Administration Phoenix Field Office.

Comments may be submitted in person on Jan. 21, via the website, or dropped off at Scottsdale Airport (15000 N. Airport Drive, Suite 200) until Feb. 3, 2014.
