Council goes the distance to promote “Fit City” living

How far will the Scottsdale City Council go to promote good health in Scottsdale?

How about the length of Arizona?

The seven Council members this spring stepped up when asked to be part of the Fit City Scottsdale program launched early this year. Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane challenged his fellow Council members to wear ActiPed devices – wireless pedometers that record every foot strike – and increase their levels physical activity.

And they did. Between March 1 and May 31, they collectively covered 661 miles – more than enough to cover the trip from Scottsdale to Nogales, on Arizona’s southern border, then all the way north to Page. They also reported feeling better, and in at least one instance, losing weight. The Mayor and several others are continuing to wear the devices as they log their weekly exercise.

“Everyone who participated in this challenge is a winner,” Mayor Lane said. “Particularly for Council members, remembering to fit physical activity into a very busy schedule requires some work. I am really excited about the results of the Fit City Challenge, and am looking forward to another. I’m also still wearing my ActiPed to stay at the top of my game!”

Ecton - Fit City Walk

Scottsdale City Councilman Wayne Ecton (above) recorded the most steps of his Council colleagues, covering 184 miles during the challenge period. Councilwoman Lisa Borowsky came in a close second, clocking 164 miles, while Councilwoman Suzanne Klapp walked 123 miles. Mayor Lane logged 80 miles himself, and has set a goal to double that total.
