City Council to consider continuance of land purchase
   for future fire station

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, the Scottsdale City Council is scheduled to vote on the purchase of an approximately 2-acre parcel of land, located at 7606 E. Jomax Road, in the amount of $475,000 plus closing costs. The City plans to use this property in the future, as the permanent location for Desert Foothills Fire Station 13.

However, City staff will be requesting a 60-day continuance for this item.  The City Council will vote tomorrow night whether to proceed with the agenda item or postpone for a future meeting date.

This property is being purchased under the Fire Department’s Capital Improvement Project (CIP) budget. However, there is no funding available for the design or construction of the station at this time. A formal CIP request for the design and construction of this project will be made to the City Council in a future budget year. Upon approval of funding, public meetings will be held to seek input and feedback on the design of the fire station.

Scottsdale Fire Department has a goal of arriving on the scene of an emergency within four minutes or less, 80 percent of the time. A key factor in reducing response time is the location of fire stations throughout our city.  Since the transition to a municipal fire department in July 2005, Scottsdale has opened Downtown Scottsdale Fire Station 2, purchased a site for the future Desert Mountain Fire Station 16 and will begin construction on two additional stations, Eldorado Park Fire Station 1 and Cactus Acres Fire Station 8, in the in the spring of 2010.

For more information, or to submit comments on the proposed purchase, please contact Assistant Fire Chief Steve Randall at (480) 312-1882, or e-mail srandall@ScottsdaleAZ.gov. Citizens are also invited to attend the public meeting at 5 p.m., Aug. 25, at Scottsdale City Hall (3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd.).
