Meeting June 12 on development impact fee study results

A new study that proposes potential changes in the way Scottsdale sets development impact fees will be the focus of a public meeting on Thursday, June 12.

The meeting is from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Civic Center Library Auditorium, 3938 N. Drinkwater Blvd.

Property owners, developers, interested citizens and other stakeholders are invited to hear a presentation and comment on the city’s water, water resources and sewer development impact fees.

The fees assure that new development pays the costs for new water sources and new or expanded water and sewer facilities needed to meet growth Since 1997, Scottsdale has collected more than $240 million in fees to acquire water rights, build water and sewer treatment facilities and build or expand water and sewer lines.

The city staff will outline the preliminary results of the study by Raftelis Financial Consultants, Inc., a nationally recognized expert in development fees. They will be collecting public comments and answering questions.

The study looked at the water and wastewater needs of the city through the year 2035 and the potential impact fees necessary to meet them. The City Council in March adopted long-range plans for water and wastewater systems that identify improvements needed to meet future growth and revitalization of older areas.

The study also examined alternatives for calculating fees. The staff will report on the alternatives, how they might change fees assessed in different parts of the city and how new fees would compare with other local communities.
