Brent Stockwell as acting city auditor

The City Council has appointed Brent Stockwell, an assistant to the Mayor and City Council, as acting city auditor effective on June 4.
The Council took action on Stockwell's appointment on June 3.

Stockwell will serve in the auditor’s role until the Council hires a permanent replacement for Cheryl Dreska. Dreska announced in May that she would retire from the post she has held since 1993.

The auditor is one of six positions reporting directly to the City Council. The others are city manager, city attorney, city clerk, city judge and city treasurer.

Stockwell has been employed with the city since 2002 as a citizen liaison in the Citizen and Neighborhood Resources Department and as an assistant to the Mayor and City Council. Stockwell has also worked as a performance auditor with the State of Arizona and for the cities of Mesa and Federal Way, Wash. He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Washington, a bachelor’s from Kansas State University and extensive management and leadership development training.

Stockwell’s work in the City Council Office included resolving citizen and council inquiries, researching key issues and preparing regular updates on city programs. He staffed the Council’s budget review and advisory board appointment processes. He has also trained hundreds of employees in the ethics policy.

In January, Stockwell was a recipient of the Bill Donaldson Award, one of the city’s highest honors. He was recognized for his charitable work, including fundraising efforts for HIV/AIDS relief in Africa. He was also recognized in June 2007 for his leadership role with the Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine.

Since March, Stockwell has been on an interim assignment as the manager of the Community Assistance Office, which manages over $7 million in federal funds.
