Local coalition to hear about “Crystal Darkness” campaign

The Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine will host a community workshop on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 at the Mustang Library Auditorium located at 10101 N. 90th St. in Scottsdale, AZ 85258. The meeting will start at 7:45 a.m. with a networking breakfast and the program will run from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Commander Chris Crockett with the Phoenix Police Department will talk about the Crystal Darkness media campaign which will be held statewide on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. On that day, nearly every network-affiliated and independent Arizona television station will simultaneously broadcast a shocking and in-depth documentary on the dangers of methamphetamine. Meeting participants will discuss how the Northeast Valley communities can join in this effort.

“The Crystal Darkness campaign will educate the general public and provide our young people with a preventative message as well as an offer of hope and help,” said Chris Crockett, Commander of the Public Affairs Bureau at the Phoenix Police Department. “This campaign will bring local, county, state and federal law enforcement together in the fight against meth.”

During Thursday's meeting, there also will be an update on coalition efforts and plans for the future. Over the past year, the coalition has hosted three document shredding events, two youth summits, sponsored the production of an anti-meth television show and has also recently published an anti-meth resource directory.

The Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine is a local effort to coordinate a community-based response to the methamphetamine problem. The coalition includes the communities of Carefree, Cave Creek, Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and Scottsdale.
