Scholarships Awarded Through Local Program Donations
Scottsdale Community Collaborative Scholarship Program
Three graduating high school students were selected as Community Scholars and each received a $2,500 scholarship toward postsecondary education. The scholarships were made possible through funding by corporate sponsors who support the City of Scottsdale’s Hispanic Heritage Community Celebration and the annual Martin Luther King, Jr Celebration, along with the educational partnership of the Community Celebrating Diversity program and the Scottsdale Unified School District.
The selection criteria and procedures of the program were designed to ensure that all eligible students receive consideration without regards to race, color, national origin, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation or economic background. Criteria included that the students must be full-time residents of Arizona; be citizens of the United States or provide evidence of being a permanent resident; have a minimum GPA of 2.8, and rank in the top 25% of their senior class. The Scholars were selected based on the combination of criteria, including financial need, community service involvement, academic performance, leadership and a required essay. All three students are very active in school and community events, work part-time jobs and are planning to attend four year universities in the fall. Those recognized were from left to right in the picture:
Alexandra Ammons graduated from Desert Mountain High School with a GPA of 4.1 and is a member of the National Honor Society. In her essay, she wrote that she is genuinely drawn to the potential for teaching, caring and influencing others, and that service to humankind is what she finds most rewarding. Alexandra is pursuing a degree in International Relations at the University of Arizona.
Alexa Lugo graduated from Saguaro High School with a 3.4 GPA. Alexa wrote in her essay that while her family faced a number pf adversities through the years, they were optimistic and started each and every day with two mottos: “Make Yourself Proud” and “Prove Them Wrong”. Alexa will attend Scottsdale Community College and then transfer to Arizona State University to pursue a degree in Business and Law.
Roxanne Zaad graduated from Saguaro High School with a 3.6 GPA and is planning to attend Northern Arizona University to earn a degree in social work. Roxanne’s essay focused on her experiences with the homeless and underprivileged which she found very rewarding. It also greatly increased her appreciation of how fortunate she is, which includes residing in the “wonderful community of Scottsdale.”
