QUALIFICATIONS

• Requires a minimum of sixty (60) credit hours or an AA or AS degree in electronics, electrical engineering technology, computer technology or a closely related field. Military technical school training in communications or telecommunications, or training received in equipment vendor service schools may substitute for the required education.
• Requires four years of journey-level experience supporting and maintaining a simulcast trunking 800MHz radio system. 
• Knowledge of installation, troubleshooting, and repair techniques of fixed radio site systems.
• Knowledge of fiber optics, computers, digital communications, processors, intelligent wiring terminals, switches, servers, routers, programming, applications, software and hardware related to radio communications.
• Knowledge of rules and regulations from the FCC and FAA as they affect the operation of licensed radio systems with registered tower transmission locations and facilities.
• Knowledge of maintenance and management of UPS and emergency battery power systems.
• Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a sophisticated microwave system, channel banks, T1 loop switches, and pressurized waveguide.
• Ability to use sophisticated radio testing equipment.
• Ability to work unsupervised and exercise initiative and independent judgment on technical issues.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, co-workers, and City staff at all levels and the general public.
• A valid Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Class Radiotelephone Certification required within one year of hire.
• One or more of the following certifications preferred:
     - Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Class
         Radiotelephone Certification 
     - National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER) Certification 
     - Association of Public safety Communications Official (APCO) Certification
     - Certified Electronics Technician (CET) Certification
• A valid driver’s license with no major driving citations in the last 39 months is required.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides day-to-day oversight and maintenance of a Motorola P25 simulcast trunking system infrastructure and subscriber radio operation and use. Provides support for all Police, Fire and local government users. Assists in system analysis, network configuration, planning, and training of users to ensure optimal wireless communications. Resolves operational problems for radio users. Helps develop procedures to guarantee that knowledge of important technical processes is passed on to other radio staff. Provides support activities for all radio site structures, environmental systems, electric service, lighting, security devices, and monitoring/alarm. Maintains inventory and assignment of Motorola P25 trunking radio systems ID’s and alias database management operations. Visits radio sites to inspect, analyze, and review equipment performance. Participates in system/sub-system administrative reviews. Develops/implements new radio programming templates and maintains radio ID and talk group assignments. Assists in performing and/or overseeing preventative maintenance activity. Install, troubleshoot, and maintain mobile radio vehicle installations. Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair Motorola Gold Elite console equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.
