Special Requirement – A supplemental questionnaire must be completed and submitted with the completed application to be considered for this process. Your application will only be accepted if you have included the supplemental questionnaire and completed the entire application. You must show current, original certifications if you are selected for an interview.
QUALIFICATIONS
Lifeguard: Must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the time of hire. Must possess current Lifeguard Training / First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications through the American Red Cross or other approved certification organization. Must have the ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies and communicate effectively with staff and public. Must be able to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a daily basis. Bilingual skills are highly desirable. Current certifications must be shown at the time of interview.
Instructor: Must be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of hire. Must possess a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (2004) certification. Current Lifeguard Training/First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications through the American Red Cross or other approved certification organization are preferred. Must be able to work in chemically treated swimming pool water and in direct sunlight. Must be able to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a daily basis. Bilingual skills are highly desirable. Current certifications must be shown at the time of interview. The Parks & Recreation Department enforces dress and appearance standards related to uniform, clothing, displaying tattoos, visible pierced body parts, hair color and style.
Cashier: Must be 15 years of age at the time of hire. Experience with customer service, handling cash, cash register operation in a work environment and computer data entry skills preferred. Other combinations of education and experience, which provide knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the work, may be accepted.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lifeguard - Sits in stationary lifeguard chair; walks and stands to observe swimmers in the pool and on the pool deck for accidents occurring in the water, on the deck, or on the diving equipment. Enters chemically treated pool water to rescue persons in trouble; and participates in training and safety checks of pool equipment and pool areas. Verbally enforces policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing the conduct of people using the swimming pool and pool deck area. Monitors and maintains facility cleanliness by completing daily cleaning duties.
Instructor - Primary responsibility is to teach swimming lessons and water exercise classes, while in chemically treated pool water. Performs administrative duties related to classes such as registration, public relations, and completes records and reports. Also performs lifeguarding duties when necessary.
Cashier – A Lifeguard or Instructor may also be required to perform cashier duties during their scheduled shift. During this time responsibilities will include greeting customers, answering the phone, handling customer inquiries, accepting payment of fees, handling cash according to city policy and procedures, issuing passes, and completing all necessary reporting and record keeping documentation,
SELECTION PROCESS
Applications and supplements will be evaluated based on training, experience and certifications. Top qualifying candidates may be invited to participate in a panel interview, written exercise, and practical water skills evaluation test. Human Resources reserve the right to change this process.
