Via Dona Trail

The Scottsdale City Council awarded a contract to Okanogan Trail Construction on August 23, 2011 to construct the Via Dona Trail, a non-motorized, multi-use path.  Scheduled to begin in early September, crews will be working to construct the trail starting at Scottsdale Road and working in an easterly direction toward Pima Road.  Prior to construction, crews will be surveying, staking and conducting a native plant inventory.  Work will take place during daylight hours, beginning no earlier than 7a.m.  This work is currently expected to take approximately 90 days to complete.

Where will the trail be located?

Via Dona Trail will be located on the south side of Via Dona between Scottsdale Road and Pima Road. The trail is approximately 2 miles long.  (Please see map)

What will the trail look like?

trail cross section 2

In general, Via Dona Trail will be eight-feet wide with a vertical clearance of 10 feet.  The surface will be compacted or stabilized granite.

Will there be lights on the trail?

This trail will not be lit.

Who can use the trail?

The trail will be used by the general public.  It may be used by pedestrians, equestrians and bicyclists.  It is designated for non-motorized access and will be signed as such.  Enforcement of rules governing the use of multiuse paths is outlined in the Scottsdale Revised Code, which includes prohibiting use of motorized vehicles on the trails.

Who owns the trail?

The trail will be built on a series of easements held by the City of Scottsdale which allow legal access for public trails.  These public access areas have been dedicated over time.  Right of way, trail and public easements were typically dedicated concurrent with adjacent land development.

As a homeowner along the trail alignment what is my liability?

The homeowners adjacent to the trail are not liable for the activity of others who willfully or unknowingly create a problem on the trail.

Who will take care of the trail?

In accordance with recommendations by the 2009 Trails Task Force, adjacent homeowner associations and commercial property owners or management companies will maintain the trail to their property limits.  The City of Scottsdale will maintain the trail next to private properties without associations.

When was this project approved and whose idea was it?

Voters approved the funding during the 2000 Bond election.  In 2004 the Scottsdale Trails Master Plan identified this corridor as a high priority for implementation and in March of 2010 the City Council approved the current design contact.

What is the purpose of this trail?

Via Dona Trail will provide a missing link in Scottsdale trail network.  Upon completion the trail will:
• Link to an existing trail along the east side of Hayden
• Link to an existing trail along the east side of 76th Street
• Link to a proposed trail along the west side of Pima Road
• Link to a proposed trail along the east side of Scottsdale Road
• Link to a proposed trail along the Rawhide Wash just west of Pima Road

How much will it cost and where did the funding come from?

The project is funded by the Bond 2000 program, which allocated $2.3 million for several trail connections, including Mountain View Trail.
